Weekly Grace: 16 February 2014

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.

– Psalm 23:4 [excerpt] (ESV)

This is my favorite verse from the Bible. It evokes some themes or motifs I love – nature, travel, the fight between good and evil, and God. But more important than linguistic appreciation, I confess that I am sometimes blinded to the awe-inspiring, all-powerful message this verse brings: how we are never truly alone, and how, precisely in those moments when we feel most alone, we are to be reminded that someone, or rather Someone, is gracing us with His presence.

St. Francis de Sales said that every one of us needs half an hour of prayer a day, except when we’re busy – then we need an hour. The Season of Lent is approaching, and with that the major chapter in God’s love story for us is to be revisited. Do we remember to sit back and reflect on this love? Do we make the time to talk to God everyday as a true Father, not merely as a vending machine to answer our prayers? Do we acknowledge His mighty, heavenly presence atop the mountains forming the valley of death?

If not, then let’s.

Wishing you a pleasant week ahead!
